daytona rocks
Mels, Switzerland
daytona rocks was created in Switzerland, on the A3 highway, on the way from Chur to Zurich. It shows the interior of a Ferrari 365 GTB/4, known as the Daytona, with the driver's hand, gloved in soft leather, on the wooden steering wheel, set against an impressive mountain backdrop.
The Daytona is one of Ferrari's great icons. Daytona though was not the official name of the car, Ferrari called it 365GTB/4, referring to 365 qcm of each of its 12 cylinders, GTB for Gran Tourismo Berlinetta and 4 for the number of overhead camshafts. Journalists called it Daytona as it was released shortly before the Scuderia Ferrari's triple victory in the 1967 Daytona 24 hours race. Enzo never approved the name.
The car shown here is from 1970, from the first series, known as the Plexiglas series, named after the headlight covers. Later models had pop-up headlights. It was a special privilege for the photographer to drive this automobile through Switzerland on this wonderful early summer day. Along the way, he felt the desire to capture his journey photographically. The best moment came when this magnificent mountain landscape appeared near the highway. The image conveys the experience of a wonderful, contemplative, exclusive journey in a very special automobile.
