The image is dominated by the water surface in the foreground, reflecting the nocturnal lights. The world-famous buildings in the background are out of focus, yet striking and clearly recognizable. The colors are discernible but muted; above them, a cloudy evening sky spreads out in chromatic contrast.

In this composition, the backdrop of Venice appears almost like from a miniature model world. However, it is a real image, captured rather by chance and not originally intended in this form by the photographer.
